Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the coaches?
We have a core group of coaches who have been mountain biking for a very long time. Our coaches have learned what works and what doesn’t from other successful organizations. The NICA coach licensing program involves many types of training: first aid, CPR, on the bike skills, and background checks for all coaches.
How much does it cost to join the team?
For the 2023/2024 season the NICA NY League charges $140 to register riders. There is a per-race fee of $30. There is a team fee of $100. Purchase of a team jersey is required to race and jerseys are $99. The league has a limited number of need-based scholarships that will reduce the $140 registration fee.
Is this team just for top racers?
If you want to compete and stand on the podium, we will support you. If you want to shred the gnar with friends, we’ll shred too. Our goals are: having fun and long term rider development.
Do I have to race to join the team?
The choice to race is yours to make. We know that different people are motivated by different things. Some riders want to leave the other teams in the dust and rack up points come race day. Some riders want to pedal, rip, and climb at their own pace. You tell us your goals for each season and we will help you reach them.
Where will we practice?
Port Jervis Watershed Trails are some of the most fun trails in Orange County. They provide a range of trails to suit all abilities and offer excellent training opportunities for racing. We also practice at Stewart State Forest and Camp Orange to mix things up.
When does the season start?
Outdoor practices start Fall 2023. During the Winter and leading up to the start of racing, riders who want to develop their endurance can do so at our indoor spin sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm.
When do races start?
Racing starts April 2024. The races start in late April and end in early June.
How many races are there in a season?
There are five races per season.
Where do we race? What are they like?
Races are located all over NY (some past venues include Peekskill, Oneonta, Liberty, Windham, and Wawarsing). We pre-ride the course on Saturday and race the course on Sunday. We have BBQs and lots of time to hang with the team and other mountain biking kids from around the state. There are hundreds of kids on bikes from teams all over NY State. Each race is an awesome mountain biking event not to be missed!
